Sony BM-577 ist ein Diktiergerät das im Wesentlichen über Schiebschalter bedient wird. Es besitzt einen dreistelligen Bandzähler für die Microkassette die für schnellen Vor- und Rücklauf ausgelegt ist. Mit jeweils zwei Geschwindigkeiten für die Aufnahme und Wiedergabe kann die Microkassette optimal genutzt werden. Andrei LEDs kann man den Betriebszustand des Geräts ablesen. Versorgt wird der BM-577 über ein Akkuladesystem (BP-43 plus Netzteil AC-E30 HG) oder über zwei AAA Batterien.
